Does “An Apple a Day” Really Keep the Doctor Away?

We’ve heard this since we were children, but does an apple a day really keep the doctor away? Well we dug up the facts and have the truth for you today!

The first instance of this saying in history was about 150 years ago in the publication “Notes and Queries.” The original text read, “Eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread.” This idea obviously stuck and has turned into today’s popular phrase.

According to Cornell researchers the claim is true, but only if you eat the skin on the apple and it is not applicable when taking vitamins instead of eating an actual apple. Natural apples provide vitamin c, antioxidants, and fiber. A few of the benefits of the nutrients in apples include:

Vitamin c helps to boost your immune system.

Pectin is a kind of fiber that helps to lower bad cholesterol and blood pressure, as well as helping to maintain a healthy digestive system.

Boron increases brain function, can help with arthritis, and promotes strong bones.

Beyond just the nutritional value apples can also help with oral health. If you have braces you will want to avoid this fibrous food. However, everyone else can enjoy these tasty treats and benefit from their natural tooth brushing abilities. Apples can kill bacteria in the mouth and help lead to fewer cavities and less tooth decay.

Another reason apples can help keep the doctor away is the fact that they are low in calories. A low-calorie diet helps to maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle. Doctors recommend consuming several fruits and vegetables daily as part of a low-calorie diet and apples definitely fall into this category.

Recent studies have shown that apples also have cancer fighting abilities. Colon and liver cancers have been tested using apples. There is also information now to suggest that fruits and vegetables, like apples, help to keep a healthy heart and avoid cardiovascular problems like heart disease.

It is important to consume many types of nutrients daily for a healthy body. Apples come in plethora of varieties. From sour to sweet there is a type of apple for everyone. Depending on the season you can find Fuji, red delicious, and granny smith apples in just about any grocery store.

So, will an apple a day keep the doctor away? Yes. But you will also need to supplement all those apples with vegetables and other healthy foods. Be sure to not focus too much on one single food, a variety of different foods and nutrients is what your body craves. An overall well balanced diet will help you avoid a doctor visit and keep your body in tip top shape.
